Supplements
Occasionally the desired results are not achievable due to lack of donor supply. In such cases, we discuss the best possible outcomes achievable and any ways to optimise the native hair growth.,Sometimes a hair transplant is not suitable for you at this time, but requires some preliminary treatments to improve the quality of the native hairs or to stabilise the hair loss and reverse any miniaturised follicles as much as possible. There are a range of treatments that can help with this, namely the following:
Hair growth relies on a steady supply of nutrients to the scalp and follicles, and genuine deficiencies can cause or worsen shedding. Supplements can help — but the evidence is clear that they mainly benefit people who actually have a measured deficiency, rather than acting as a routine “hair vitamin” for everyone.
Nutrients linked to hair health
- Iron (ferritin): Low iron stores are a well-recognised cause of shedding, especially in women; correcting a deficiency can help.
- Vitamin D: Involved in the hair-follicle cycle; low levels are associated with several types of hair loss.
- Zinc: Important for follicle function and tissue repair — but too much can be harmful (see below).
- B vitamins, including biotin (B7): Support keratin production, although true biotin deficiency is rare.
- Vitamin C: Helps iron absorption and collagen formation.
What the evidence shows
- Supplements reliably help only when they correct a documented deficiency, confirmed by blood tests such as ferritin and vitamin D.
- For biotin, the best-quality trials show no benefit in people who are not deficient, despite heavy marketing.
- More is not better: high-dose zinc can itself cause hair loss by depleting copper, and some vitamins are toxic in excess.
A sensible approach
- Start with a balanced diet rich in lean protein, fruit, vegetables and whole grains, which covers most people’s needs.
- Ask for testing if shedding is unexplained, your diet is restricted, or you have a condition that affects absorption.
- Supplement to correct a confirmed gap — and review it — rather than taking high-dose “hair” products indefinitely.
At Geneve, supplements are recommended only where they make sense for you, ideally guided by blood tests, so you treat an actual deficiency rather than masking another cause of hair loss.
