Exosome therapy is a regenerative treatment that uses nanoscale vesicles derived from stem cells to signal dormant hair follicles. These vesicles carry growth factors, proteins and genetic messengers (such as microRNA) that cells normally use to communicate. Delivered into the scalp by microneedling or fine microinjections, the aim is to wake miniaturised follicles, thicken existing strands and calm scalp inflammation.
How it works
- Cellular messengers: Exosomes act as biological instructions, signalling inactive or miniaturised follicles to re-enter the active growth phase (anagen).
- Growth factors: They release molecules that support blood supply (vascularity), follicle repair and a healthier follicle environment.
- Delivery: A course is applied to the scalp by microneedling or microinjection, usually alongside the rest of your treatment plan.
What the evidence shows
- Early studies are encouraging: small clinical trials report improvements in hair density and shaft thickness, and some comparisons suggest exosomes may outperform PRP.
- The overall body of evidence is still limited and not yet conclusive — most studies are small (often 20–50 people) and larger, long-term randomised trials are needed.
- It is regenerative support, not a cure: exosomes can boost existing follicles but do not create new ones or reverse advanced pattern baldness.
Regulation & safety
- There are currently no FDA-approved exosome products for hair loss, and the FDA has issued public warnings about unregulated exosome products.
- Because products and protocols vary widely, exosome therapy should only be considered under qualified medical supervision, with realistic expectations and transparent sourcing.
What to expect
- A typical protocol runs to 3–5 sessions spaced roughly 2–4 weeks apart.
- Visible thickening, where it occurs, usually takes 3–6 months and is best maintained with an ongoing plan.
